Mule shoes - shoes with a long history

Once again we are convinced that everything is new and fashionable – it long forgotten old. So the spring-summer 2018 season will be marked by the return to fashion of the once popular women's shoes – mules.

Mulle shoes: pathos and popularity

These shoes appeared long before our times, which gives them even more extravagance and originality. Similar to modern mule shoes, flat-soled slippers without a heel, which had a closed front, were worn by representatives of the ancient Roman nobility, royal courtiers and even the supreme ministers of the church. Perhaps that is why such shoes began to be called mulleus, which in Latin means "thinker".

Initially, such shoes were the prerogative of exclusively men and were made only from dark red or purple leather. At the same time, it was intended to make it more convenient to take off your shoes: in ancient Rome and Greece, the rich & nbsp; took off their shoes in society & nbsp; for show, thereby demonstrating their social status and that they do not need to work to have money.

In the 17th-18th centuries, mules became shoes not only for men, but also for women. At the same time, cotton was also used for their tailoring, which made backless shoes more affordable and comfortable to wear: it was very hot in leather slippers in summer, and cotton shoes could even be worn in the chambers and used as indoor shoes. But due to the availability of mules, courtesans began to wear them: in order to remove such shoes, it was not necessary to bother with clasps. Therefore, their popularity in decent society has greatly diminished.

In 1694, the Countess D’Olonne, a prominent beauty of Paris, took mules toes to a new level by wearing bright red brocade shoes to worship in church. Then a similar model was seen during a meeting of the French court, and a little later on the legs of the beloved of King Louis XV Madame de Pompadour and Queen Marie Antoinette. At that time, mules began to be considered a sexy and seductive type of footwear. Although they were closed, but not on a flat sole, but on a high and often curved heel, and decorated with decorative buckles, embroidery, precious stones, feathers, appliqué, inlaid with rhinestones etc.

Mules and modernity

Until the  XX century, mules were closely associated with women of easy virtue. But Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s returned their reputation by making mules her favorite shoes. Then she began to appear in society in shoes on transparent heels with a bright feather pom-pom. Imitating the great blonde of all times and peoples, all Hollywood beauties began to vying to wear shoes with a closed toe, that is, as it was intended a long time ago, but with a little interpretation. Now the toe of mules could be open and richly decorated. And the shape of the heel also began to change: from low square to thin and elegant.

Mulle shoes have again become a sign of wealth. And if a woman appeared on the street in sandals without a back, it meant that she arrived by car, because walking in mules was very difficult – they always fell. But in the 60s, shoe designer Beth Levine simplified the life of many fashionistas and added an elastic insole to the style of mules, and they no longer slipped off women's feet. she was sued in the 1990s.

In the early 2000s, Karine Roitfeld, former editor-in-chief of French Vogue magazine, said in an interview with the New York Times that she dislikes mules for the sound they make: clog, clomp, clump. This does not add chic to them, but to the image of elegance, she said. However, the Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik recognized himself as a great fan of mules, because a woman in mules is more graceful, and her walk becomes sexy, "cat".

What is the "highlight" mules?

You can love or hate mules, but you can't deny the fact that they will become the most fashionable in the season spring-summer 2018  it's impossible. It used to be only with a closed toe and high heels, but now the imagination of designers will not will limit! And in our opinion, the current fashion trends will be able to satisfy even the most demanding fashionistas. In addition, due to the wide variety of models, mules can be combined with almost any clothing. This is the main advantage of this type of shoes –  ;in their versatility.

But... To maintain a business style, it is better to choose mules with a thin nose and a hairpin, reminiscent of classic pumps. For everyday wear – shoes with open toe and various decorations. It is also important to pay attention to the shape of the heel. So, for women with full calves  stylists advise choosing mules with square heels or with imitation wedges, and for thin legs – thin heels, stilettos, "glass" or an elongated rectangle.

The main rule of wearing mules –  is not to hide beauty. Therefore, when choosing such shoes for a particular look, consider the length of the skirt or trousers and choose cropped models that, in combination with mules, will visually lengthen the legs and focus on the ankle.
