All about pin-up style
The word pin-up is most often associated with red lipstick, lush curls and defiant clothing. This style appeared in the 19th century and reached its peak in the 1950s. The pin-up is associated with an illustrative image of a seductive cover girl. The term “Pin-up” from English it means “to pin on”, and the girl whose image is placed on the poster is called pin-up girl.
The history of this style begins with the name of the American illustrator Charles Gibson. In 1890, he kept his chronicle, where he depicted the daily life of his compatriots. Then Gibson had his own painted ideal of beauty, which was called "Gibson Girl". The image showed a beautiful young lady with a thin waist, large breasts and hips, who wore long skirts and had a dominant character.
Already in the 30s, illustrations of girls of a sexual nature appeared. Various media and publishing houses wanted to attract more attention to themselves by featuring semi-nude women in seductive poses on the covers. At the same time, the Paramount Pictures studio created a cartoon image of Betty Boop, the heroine of which wore defiantly short tight dresses and bathing suits. But the pin-up gained real popularity during the Second World War. The soldiers literally tore out posters of girls from magazines and pasted them over the walls. Pin-up girls were the so-called ideal, a dream for American soldiers, and all women tried to imitate and repeat their style.
One of the most famous pin-up models was Marilyn Monroe. Everyone remembers the moment when in one of the films the actress's skirt is lifted up from the air flow from the ventilation hatch? This is the same pin-up technique! The image of Marilyn Monroe with a flying white pleated dress is still used on all kinds of posters. The star adhered to the pin-up style in everyday life, this is evidenced by her favorite scarlet lipstick, arrows on her eyes, light fabrics in outfits, neckline and emphasized waist.
Pin-up is not so popular now, but modern designers from time to time succumb to the fashion trend of the 50s. Pin-up elements can be seen in some of the Dolce & Gabbana, Blumarine, Missoni. A striking representative of this style can be called Dita Von Teese, who attracts attention with her defiant images.
